Howdy,
At the recent StarTech in Sacramento CA, BioDiesel
fuel was discussed. We were told that to run pure
BioDiesel the fuel lines and "O" rings need to be changed to Viton rubber. I would appreciate any
help finding this material for my MB diesel.

I have no idea what sizes you will need, but a convenient source for both sae and metric "o" rings in almost any material is www.mcmaster.com

I don't know where to get the viton seals, though you might try calling PacificBiofuel, Inc at 831.234.0200.

Here are a number of webistes in addition to the www.pacfuel.com that you mentioned.

www.veggievan.com
www.biodiesel.org
www.biodieselnow.com

Good luck finding Viton metric hoses and O rings for your diesel - but I doubt you really need that for Biodiesel . . .none of my literature on the stuff indicates that requirement . . .but isn't that Bioidiesel expensive?

I will try the URLs mentioned by Robby A. and
Walt P.. George, the BioDiesel is pretty pricey
but may be down a little soon according to the
presenter at StarTech; he said $2.45 soon. Number
2 diesel is about $1.81 around here at present.
This is kind of an experiment for me to see how
my MB runs on the stuff. I did pick up some fuel
line and a fuel system "O" ring at my dealer and
dropped a short piece of the line and ring into pure
BioDiesel to see if any change would be apparent.
No change the last time I looked. For the present
I'll stay with the 80 percent BP/Arco low sulfur(15ppm) and 20 percent
Biodiesel. Cheers, B. Jahnke...

Robert

I attended the Biodiesel seminar at StarTech also and heard Russ Teal mention the necessity of viton o-rings and hoses. My daughter has been using vegatable oil in her 123 300D for several months now and hasn't yet experienced any problem. I don't know how long it will take for a problem to occur.

George mentioned the cost. Ilse pays $4/gallon for vegatable oil. For her it is worth it to reduce diesel emissions by 75% and to eliminate NOX completely.

Howdy,
I've been to all the web sites Robby A. suggested
and had a grand time. Also tried<www.cytoculture.com> and enjoyed their "Handbook".
I think the best info I've found was from Mike at<www.oringswest.com> in Seattle. Their web site was helpful. They show Viton and Nitrile/Buna-N
side by side. Mike says the >NBR< on the side of the fuel hose I just bought from MB means Nitrile/
Buna-N and is the world standard for fuel hose.
Viton is only a little more abrasion resistant and a little more heat tolerant. Brent Laucher at PacificBiofuel,Inc. says their pre'92 MBs use standard fuel hose with 100% BioD and no problems.
Looks like George was right again!
Peace, Bob J...

OOPS,I forgot to add...
Perhaps, most importantly, both NBR and Viton
are listed on the Oringswest web site as both
having the higest rating for resistance to most
oils,(including 'veggie') and Methane.
