I have had my sl55 at the dealership several times because the front wheels lock up during aggressive braking, which results in skid marks on the pavement and a decreased finess in the handeling of the car. I recently had a meeting with a representative from MBUSA, the Service Manager and the Mechanic who worked on the car.
The mbusa rep says that the car is doing what it is designed to do. They state that what appears to be one skid mark is actually several as the brakes are "doing their job". 5'-3' 1.5' 6" etc. They are actually saying this is how the car is designed to perform.
Previously at the dealer ship I demonstrated the condition by bringing the car to 50 mph and then hitting the brakes hard. In the summer it left 10' skid marks, In performance driving, the condition presents itself when driving fast and you brake hard before turn in. So in actuality, I am going 50-80 mph with the front wheels locked up. The MBUSA team represents that the brake system says the car maintains "steerability" and that is what it is designed to do. I suggested it was not indicative of a "race inspired" performance automobile. The rep said he would check with another engineer but he really did not think ther was anything wrong with the car.
