Hi guys!!! Well, this particular post doesn't actually belong here, but somehow I prefer to put it in 'our own' forum...
I've seen a few (oil) filter brands,like: Mann,Mahle,Knecht and Hengst,(Are there others??)
I'd very much like to know what do you think of these individual brands,e.g. quality, make, etc.
Any comments, opinions or historical backgrounds on them are very much welcomed!
Currently,I'm using a Knecht oil filter in my W114,cost me about US$3.70.
Thanks again, guys! BYE for now and GOD BLESS!!! :) :) :)

Those are the good ones. Those companies supply filters to MB. I don't/wouldn't-want-to use filters that aren't one of those 3-4 brands.

I concur with vince. There are a bunch of garbage filters available, but the ones mentioned do not fall into that catagory. These filters are all Spec for the Benz and will deliver the same performance, where others will have much worse performance and may harm your car
Hello WL,
Knecht and Mann filters were the original filters used by the factory in your car. If you order a filter from the Mercedes dealer it will probably be one of these two brands re-packaged into a Mercedes box.
Other good quality filters are Bosch, Hengst, and Mahle. Beware of other off brands, the quantity and quality of the filtering paper in the filter can vary drastically.
If I recal you have the inline six with the single overhead camshaft in your W114. The most important thing you can do is make sure the upper seal in your filter housing is in place. These are often missing and are not in the filter kit. If this seal is missing the oil will by-pass the filter altogether! I am not talking about the large o-ring on the top of the filter canister. The seal I am reffering to seals the filter to the upper housing. Check to make sure it is in place and is still pliable. The part number for this seal is #000 184 3380

Other good quality filters are Bosch...
I would not use Bosch oil filters. They're not OEM. Everything else previously mentioned, Knecht, Mann, Mahle, and Hengst are OEM.

Hi guys,Thanks for all your replies.
Joe,my W114 no longer has the original M180 6-cyl. eng.,in fact,it is now more of a 'W115' :D ,because it has been replaced with a M115 4-cyl. 200 petrol eng,years ago,by the previous owner.
When I replaced my oil filter some time back, the Knecht filter set includes the large O-ring and 2 copper washer,a small one and a huge one(not the flat type, but a bit circular). The small one is for the canister securing bolt, and I reckon that the larger one is for the top of the filter against the upper housing, yes? The bottom of the metal canister has this thick O-ring that seems to be securely fitted, thus I didn't fiddle with it.
There was NO seal on top of the filter when I removed it,so I reckoned that it was probably missing. And I put the larger washer to the top,as it fits in nicely.Hopefully I got it right!!!
Thanks a lot, guys! BYE for now and a BLESSED NEW YEAR to all!!! :) :) :)
Hello,
Yes the large rubber seal is actually installed on the neck of the filter mount (on the engine) and the large o-ring goes in the groove in the filter canister. For some reason the large rubber seal on the engine which seals off the top of the filter was never included in any filter kits!
On future engines (M110, M116, M117 etc)Mercedes designed the top filter seal is onto the filter.
