My 1963 220SE fintail sedan with 47,000 original miles and rebuilt auto runs great with little or no vibration. However, the cabin becomes very loud over 50 MPH. In addition it has a kind of resonance at about 1 HZ frequency over 65 MPH. I have replaced the engine mounts, adjusted the valves, put insulation under the carpeting and even put sound insulation under the hood to no avail.
I expect moderate noise with the 13 inch wheels and high revs, but this noise is an annoying drone and louder than I would expect (MY Jaguar MK2 1961 sedan with automatic is much quieter by comparison).
I have been told by someone that the front subframe mounts may be the culprit and is known to be a common problem with this model. Mercedes classic parts told me that "a mount kit" ,part # 111 586 06 33 is available from Germany at a cost of $332. Does that sound right? I am not familiar with the subframe but I would think that replacing some rubber mounts should be pretty cheap and simple??
Maybe these models were meant to be quite noisy and I should just invest in a good sound system?
Any other ideas appreciated. Chris
