Where's the engine number?

I've got a '67 300SE cabriolet and I'm having difficultly locating the engine number (I'm a car nut but new to the Mercedes). I'm told its on the drivers side of the engine towards the fire wall about half way down but all I see are two little screw holes as if a plate were once attached. Is the # stamped in? was it on a 'plate'? If I get the number, can I have a plate re-made?

ps -- can the W112 chassis take 'most' parts from the W109/108 as some shops lead me to believe?

the engine number is stamped on the top lip of block,and has a plate with same numbers.look next and behind injection pump.
