I have a few problems with my 95 SL500 - looks like I have a leak in AC - I'm just guessing it's the evaporator.

Also my soft top stopped working and I noticed fluid on the ground when I parked the car.

Looking for a good mechanic -(not a MB dealer) in the Lakewood, Tom's River area of New Jersey.

Can most Auto AC mechanics at least find the leak?

Thank you

G & T auto in Jersey City is great for my. I have been using him for 20 plus years. MB and Beemers are his speciality. Reasonably price, fast and knowledgeable. 201 434 0197. No bull. Ask for Nick, owner.

Hi, I am looking for any mechanic recommendations in Central New Jersey. Anything reasonably close to Westfield/Rahway/Woodbridge. Thanks.

My 300SE has had some rust that I'd like to take care of, and properly. I love the car, would like to keep it for as long as possible, and would in particular want to make sure there are no structural issues.

So I'd like to find a shop that I can trust my car to to do the right thing. I live in the Red Bank area so that would be my preference, but I don't mind driving further (including e.g. to Pennsylvania) if it's worth it.

Looking forward to your recommendations.

I recommend Bell's Mercedes on E Ridgewood Ave in Paramus. One of the larger MB Indy's - 3 bays - they always have a lot full of classics. Anyone can help you, but Jim Bell (also a former MB shop foreman) is the owner. 201 652 8197.

There are many more shops around here, but I haven't been to them.

UPDATE 12/12/07: Tito Krisnamurthy and his partner have split up, he is running his business out of a gas station on Rte 23 in Wayne. I can absolutely vouch for Tito and his work; he has worked on all my cars and done excellent work each time, even refusing to do work that wan not necessary (and taking the time to prove that it wasn't!) he is also a whiz with transmissions. Call him on his cell phone 201.303.2728 for now.

Once he gets a more permanent shop, I'll post an update

Hello all,

This is my first post, but I'm happy to say it may be a good one for those looking for a good mechanic, at least. I have been using Wolfegange Ascher of Stuttgart Auto repair, located on Route 206 in Southhampton, New Jersey for a little more than a year. He's originally from Stuttgart and trained in the Mercedes factory there. He's actually an engineer who's happier working on his favorite cars. But be careful, he won't work on anything else as his web site's name suggests: www.onlybenz.com. Can't say enough good things about him. Knows when to repair, when to live with something, etc. Saves you money and time. And gives peace of mind.

Frankly, he's probably the only reason I still have my Benz. I was plenty sick and tired of the dealer's costs and unavailability before I learned of him.

Have any of you heard of this guy?

I'd like to support Don's recommendation for Bell's. I had my car done yesterday and they were excellent. Professional, efficient, and knowledgeable.

Tito now has a more permanent shop, renting out the 4 bays in the Exxon station on Alps Rd in Wayne (east of Rt 23, maybe a mile, at the top of the hill by the light). He still uses his cell phone for contact.

This shop has a really, really nice alignment rack, absolutely top of the line. Great tire equipment and, of course, Tito. I still very heartily recommend him for work on any Benz, and he is a transmission wizard as well.

Not too far for you, Ditmire Motorworks in Absecon, NJ. They have been my dealer/service shop (secondary market) for several years now, and their work is excellent! Exit 40 on the Parkway, straight down Rte 30, past MacDonalds on the right. Phone: 609.641.3392

For those close to western RT 80..check out Pocono Autowerks in Stroudsburg Pa....he does all my work on modified 16V's as well as my Wald 190 3.2, my 500 sl and a pack of local 320's....also Audi VW, BMW, ..very good, and reasonable...always finds the cause..not just a parts changer. He is currently doing a total rebuild/mod to one of my 16V motors...jumping compression and installing Vems stand alone as well as hot intake.

For those in Bergen County: Wolfgang's in Tenafly. He kept my 1995 E320 running until I decided to get a new E350 in June 2008. He even has loaner cars!
