I need a source for the visco-fan clutch in the front of my 1991 350SDL (126.135). The prices I have seen start at $180 and go up, and the one I have only turns the (metal) fan blade weakly.... No wonder it seems to run hot.

Any leads on that would be welcome, as would advice on experiences with non-genuine MB versions of same.

Don

I'll see if we have a spare at the shop on Monday.

Hi Don: Did you ever get the fan clutch for your car? If not, here's one for less:

OK, an update:

The symptom was that it was running hot, 90 C and more obe average, often dipping into 110 C territory -and that was in April, before it even got hot out (and before I converted the R12 that was leaking to R134a)

With the engine plenty hot, putting the end of a rolled up newspaper into the fan caused it to stop easily. I bought a fan and clutch from someone on the forum, but it turned out the be the wrong version, for a much earlier car. sigh. (I still have it, eventually eBay).

Bit the bullet, bought a new clutch, fan, and bolts from MB. Pleaded poverty. got a great discount. (These guys know me, I buy a lot from them). Also bought the little 8mm hex socket (3/8" drive) MB special tool - under $5, believe it or not. Replaced the fan & clutch, it made a huge difference, not 80 C or less.

The "or less" part had me worried. It gave me OK heat soon enough, but once I paid attention, I found that the engine was still at 60 C after 10 minutes of 50 MPH driving.... Not Good.

Replaced the thermostat - stuck partway open - and replaced the coolant for fun, now it gets to 80 C right away and sticks there. Even in the hottest, never above 95 C.

The fan, clutch, thermostat, screws, a meter of fuel return hose, AND a rebuilt injector (and seal washer): $321.24 Can't complain about that!

Don.
