The seats in my wife's 2001 C320 are very hard and provide no lumbar support. Are all MB seats this uncomfortable? The seats in most of my other cars are designed with an outward curve at the lower part of the seat back. But these seats seem pretty much flat in this area. Is this a common design feature? Why don't these expensive cars come with adjustable lumbar support?

They do if you pay for it. Possible, but not worth retrofitting. Maybe one of those lumbar cushions from Pep Boys?
Contrary to your experiences, I have had nothing but supreme comfort from my seats, in every benz I have ever had. This includes driving on 3 day, 2000 mile road trips frequently. Models 201, 202, 124, 126. Didn't like 107 or 129, but never owned either.
I guess we are all assembled differently, and what is good for me might not be for you, and vice-versa. Maybe try a different angle to the backrest?

dhopkins,
My experience coincides with Don350DSL's.
Is there a chance that there's something wrong with your particular seat that needs correction?
