I have a 1970 3.5 V8 Coupe, and I am not finding the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley or timing marks. Chilton's "Mercedes Benz 1968-73" makes mention of:
...read the firing point on the balancing plate or vibration dampener...
And I am having trouble finding this, and the other books in my Mercedes repair library do not cover the 3.5 V8 in any detail, so what are they talking about? Is there a best practice to adjust the timing?
I am also curious if there is a trick to getting RPM readings on these engines? My shiny new Dwell Meter can switch between Dwell and RPM, but RPM shows zero, which also hurts my confidence in the Dwell reading of 44 degrees, since I understand the proper setting is 30 +/- 1 degree (per Chilton's).
The engine is running very well actually, and I am trying get some measurement prior to tuning. It has been over 10,000 miles since last tune up (gapped points twice in that time) but I am trying to baseline prior to installing new cap, plugs, points etc.
Any help is appreciated!
