Upon raking delivery of my new SL I purchased the Mercedes-Benz approved nattery charger from the dealer at a cost of $160.00. It is a maintenance type charger which can be left plugged in for months at a time (winter) without destroying any electronics or overcharging the batteries. It is really a nice unit.
It is made by CTEK of Sweden, model 3300. In doing a web search, I found this charger to be available online from serveral sources for $69.95. If you are looking for a good charger that won't damage your car this is the one.
