Mystery Bracket in Trunk of '64 230SL

In the trunk of my 1964 230SL there is a downward turned bracket on the aft bulkhead that nearly touches the floor just left of the latch striker plate. Does anyone know what the heck this is for?

Please give a more accurate description, and is it welded on or bolted on ??

I'll try to look at a car on Monday to check my memory, but it may be there to hold the lug wrench.

Hello,

Some cars had special brackets for optional "fitted luggage".

After taking a look at a couple of cars, I agree with Joe--I think it is a hold-down for fitted luggage.
