I am considering purchase of the factory CD-ROM service manual for my 1972 350 SL. The MB rep described the PC system requirements, but left me somewhat uncertain on whether an internet connection is absolutely mandatory for the CD-ROM to function properly. I would like to use the CD-ROM in my garage but it is not internet wired. Anyone know the answer? Do these CD-ROMs rely on an internet link to transfer data from from the mother-ship to us earthlings, or is the information all resident on the CD-ROM?
Thanks,
Jim Hansz

My CDs (W124 & 190SL) are stand-alone.

Not a neccessary connection. Just put the cd in the slot and have fun.

I think what they may of been talking about is the format the manual is displayed. It has an internet appearance of sorts.

While the CD manuals are great to have, I would recommend getting the paper manuals whether from MBUSA (if still available) or from eBay. It is much nicer to have paper manuals in front of you in the workshop in the heat of working on your car, than having to run to the computer upstairs to find the specific document on the CD that you are looking for, and then print it out to bring down.
Just a thought.
Cheers,
Gerry

I would also consider buying the real manual. I have the 107 manual on CD and the electrical wiring diagrams are somewhat scanned and not even blown up do they clear up. Spend the money in the original or at least find some one who have the same brand of CD that came from the same supplier and ask their opinion. Believe me the manual will not make you a mechanic if not already. They give only general info most of the time. For me being a mechanical troubleshooter it was, most of the time, enough for me. Tell you this forum can give you the best advise, most of the time.

I always have purchase the shop manuals for my cars. Now I have a C230 Kompressor 2000 for which all manuals are on CD. I purchased the CD to install a changer in my car. The CD is very incomplete and difficult to navigate; it is by no means a “shop manual”; it is more like a toy put together by an amateur. The wiring diagrams are ok and it is possible to magnify and cross reference the components. On the other hand we need to get use to CD manuals because paper manuals will disappear soon. Furthermore Mercedes is offering the “on line service” where you pay $20 per day to use the manuals. This is the reality today and we have to get use to it.

Is the CD you have for your 2000 C230 a factory publication? If so, where did you get it? I've been waiting for them to put one out for my 210 chassis. I didn't think MB had put out any CD's for anything into the 90's yet, yet alone your 2000. The older CD's I have are the complete factory manuals. They are actually nothing more than scans of the paper manuals. I find them somewhat awkward to use, but they are complete.

Thanks Meme. That's interesting. I've been waiting awhile for the CD on my 210 chassis. It's been promised for several years, but the last I heard from MBUSA, they were only into the early 90's on their CD's. Maybe Tom will be able to track down what is now available.

I think I'd better call my friends in Montvale and find out what's going on. I always seem to be the last one to hear about this stuff.

They are stand alone. The files that pop up when clicked upon are in Adobe Acrobat format which can be read on your screen or printed.

I have a CD copy of the Model 107 Service Manual, ,,, but it has become unreadable,,, I have taken it to several PC shops without any luck..... Can you tell me where I can buy another copy of the CD. Mine had a blue and white label with the MB logo and the SL radiator above,,,, and labeled Model 107 Service Manual Library. It had a high speed racing sound at the beginning...

Bauer:
You may be out of luck for a new copy of the factory manual on CD ROM. I just checked the factory website with the intent of referring you there, but see that the 107 manual is no longer listed. Perhaps this is temporary so they can update the package for later editions of windows...

If your CD is just scratched or otherwise unreadable for some mechanical reason, you might go to an audio shop. There are repair kits with polishes to remove the scratches. Makes them like new...
Sorta underscores the importance of making a copy for a spare.

Thank You for the research. I just wanted to get a better CD. The one I bought looks like it has beed copied a hundred times. Very bad pictures of wiring and such. Let me know if you hear of any new manuals up and about.
