Workshop Manual describes test where the dampener should slip with 10 kilo of rotating force. When test fails there does not appear to be any way to adjust the friction other than cleaning and replacing the two rubber springs. Mine still takes 22 kilo after cleaning and new rubber. Dare I remove some of the eight springs? Other suggestions?

Why would you want the dampener to slip?

If it is that tight - all the better . . are you sure the 10 kilo force is not a minimum?

BTW John - I have found a 1972 300SEL4.5 with only 16,000+ miles on it - one documented local (TN) owner. Car is like new - engine a little grimy from dust, but only leak is A/C oil at base of rec/drier. It needs a fuel pump and possible other items since it was not driven very much - sat since February '06 due to no one in area knows how to check fuel pump except me - MB dealer has NO techs that understand this car . . . sad indeed . . .
