View Full Version : "Shuddering 1987 300 D Turbo"

A few weeks ago I wrote asking if anyone had any idea why my 300D would run rough at idle when the weather got hot. Nobody came up with a answer that corrected the problem, however I thank those who responded. I finally took it to the Mercedes-Benz dealer in Kelowna, BC and their service foreman figured it out right away. It was the timing of the injector pump was out. Timed it, and it is fine now. All for $114.00 Can. Now, I would like to know how I pull the instrument cluster out because I need to replace a bulb. My 240 D pulled out easy, but I can't figure this one out. Thank you, Clifford.

The 124 instrument cluster comes out the same way as the 123 - There are no screws holding the instrument cluster in
place. It's a friction fit. There are rubber pieces that
hold it snugly and if it has not been removed (ever or even
recently) they may well be ALMOST vulcanized to the dash.
You can remove the under dash panel and push it out from
behind (you can disconnect the speedometer cable either 1st
from behind or after the cluster is out sitting on the
steering column cover (be sure to extend the steering column
to it's full length to have sufficient clearance to get the
cluster out). You can also remove the left side dash speaker
and get your arm/hand in there and push it out (a friend and
surgeon suggested that one and uses it himself) or you can
buy or fashion from a heavy coat hanger, hooks that are
slide into the dash on either side of the cluster and are
then rotated to grapple the side of the cluster. Then you
pull firmly (and this can take a LOT of strength) until the
cluster is displaced and move about an inch outward - then
it's easy and once the cluster is sit-in on the steering
column, the speedometer and electrical connections (there
are 5-6 electrical connectors if I recall correctly). There
may also be a vacuum line on a gasoline car.
