I have a 1970 280S, and I want to refinish the wood on the dash. But I have been unable to remove the piece that goes from the drivers side A-pillar to the ashtray, because I can not get the knob off of the headlight switch. So if any one can help me get that knob off it would be much appreciated.

Just pull hard. It's held in with friction. You might find it easiest to pull the switch body from the back and let handle pop off. However that will scratch your hand something aweful. Wear a heavy glove when you do it and be prepared to curse creatively.
