won't restart

1985 300D Turbo

sitting at stoplight, car started chugging for a minute and died, wouldn't restart. car in excellent condition, never any previous symptoms. was on my way to gas station for diesel as gauge was near empty. never run out of fuel before and don't know if that is the problem. obtained three gallons and put into tank. still won't start. engine turns over normally but no firing.

Did you prime the fuel system after adding fuel?

no, I did not prime the fuel system....how does one do that? (thank you for your response)

If in fact you ran out of fuel, then you Ned to prime the fuel system. Just before the prefilter there is a priming pump. You need to pump it until the sound changes (it is very noticeable). Then it ought o fire back up for you.
