My name is Brent Lang and this past weekend I picked up a 1963 Mercedes 220B for a very very good deal. Here she is

The car is in very good condition for its age and I have fallen in love with the looks and style of this car. The comfort of this car is amazing in the sense that this was built back in '63 and I prefer its fit over my other cars including my 1972 Karmann Ghia.
It is an original California car with the original 1963 Black Plate. The car was sold for 100 dollars and included a surf board in the deal and remained in a heated garage/basement since around 1995. The cars breaks still work and the under side is incredibly solid.

I am not new to cars in general as I am in the middle of a restoration of my Karmann Ghia (engine work, suspension work, interior restoration, wiring... you name it) which will be taken care of first before I move on to this jewel.

The engine is the inline six mated to the Automatic trans

and I am very fascinated with it due to its construction and assembly as this is so different from the flat four that I am used to, its also a great deal bigger too which is awesome.

The car needs some things:
(Most important) Ignition switch with key
Drivers side red door card.
Glove box
Radio

Is there any manual that you guys can recommend such as Bently for this car or should I look else where. One main question that I have is if the parts for these cars are still in production through Mercedes as I have a friend that is a service technician at my local Mercedes dealer/repair shop.
Thanks for you time

Wow, what a beauty. Not perfect, but a great driver it seems.

Manuals: Read this. (http://mbca.cartama.net/showthread.php?t=17075)

Parts: You would be quite surprised to learn how much is still available from MB. One suggestion is to go to http://wpc.startekinfo.com and subscribe for a month's worth of the Electronic Parts Catalog ($3) - print every page and picture and you have it forever. Also, the MB Classic Center (there's a link to them off mbusa.com) is a valuable resource as well.

If you're not a member of MBCA, you might want to consider it - lots of valuable info available for you.

I picked up the car for 300 so I think I got a deal. Any leads on door cards? I have all but one.

This lump of coal could easily be a diamond one day. I have a new set of rear bumpers that I am sure will fit. Check with me at charliel@texhoma.net.

The paper parts book for this car shows up on ebay from time to time. It lays out every nut and bolt for the car. The little books have only the pictures. The big books have pages for part numbers. In this case, the big book is kinda bright pink and weighs in at close to 1,000 pages and is worth about 50$.

Call mercedes at 1-800-for-merc and order the CD service manual for the car and print what you need as you need it.

One little thing. Those frayed fuel lines are just pretty covers on metal lines. Don't worry about them. I learned that on my first car when I went to undo one and discovered that I wacked a rather expensive metal line for no reason at all.

You say you need a new key AND a lock? The whole lock assembly is a bear to replace without the key turned to an "ON" position. You sure you need that? A used lock should be easy to get as there are plenty of dead finback cars out there.

If all you need is the tumbler assembly, that's easy to get used, but it is better to get one keyed to the original lock. That's not so easy and benz will charge you for it. Just getting a replacement key is as easy as walking into a benz dealer with a title (if titled) or registration (if not) with your name on it and laying down 20$.

I need the both the ignition switch and key as it has neither to try to start it (im in the south so finding part cars for this is kind of hard, but theres a possible place I know of that I can look for). The repair manual is on the way and should be here in a bit.

How are the gas tanks on these cars (rear under the trunk), are they pretty stout or do I need to look into getting a new one due to rust and what not. I work on old vws and rust in the gas tank is a big big pain to try to get the car running properly with carbs.

Are the automatic transmissions ok on these cars as far as being this old and able to work and are they easy to change the oil out of or is there an assortment of special tools that I will need.

Ill be looking for the parts manuals on ebay soon.

Thanks for all the response.
