Help! My '84 500 SEL Benz has 193K on it and has developed some upsetting problems when cold. 1st, the engine starts fine when cold but blows blck soot out of tail pipe. Unless it is allowed to sit and idle for at least 15 min. before starting to drive, the engine will die as soon as the throttle is released. As soon as the engine is up to operating temp, then the dying problem goes away until you stop the engine then restart and start driving again. Really frustrating! Finally, the idle seems to be too slow but I don't know how to increase idle speed. Please help! I love my Benz. It is a great car! :)

you seem to have described a warm up regulator issue. This item sits towards the front of the block, right of the thermostat housing, and has a 14mm line and a 12mm line entering through the top. Perhaps this seems helpful? Any warm up regulator from a 560, 420, 380 or 500 should work, but, ultimately, the best one to get is always the one for a 500.
