I have a 1999 E-430 that I have had since new. Two days ago my odometer went blank and now reads 000000. I was told that there is a computer chip within the computer that has gone bad and I will need to replace the entire computer. I was told that replacing the instument cluster would not fix the problem because the computer stores the odometer reading not the odometer cluster. I need some technical help out there on what I need to replace. I had 57,500 miles on my vehicle when the odometer went out. I'd rely on a dealer to explain to you what has happened and what needs to be replaced, but there is surely no reason not to drive your car.

You really ought to have a dealer diagnose the problem and reprogram the cluster.
