I would like to replace the Kangol seatbelts on my 3.5 coupe w/retractable type 3-point belts.

I've already replaced the belts on my 70 Cabrio with a set from Andover restraints. The retractor reel and shoulder mount attached fine to the stock locations, and the 12" long buckle end attached ok to the driveshaft tunnel, but its a long reach back when using the belts, which is fine as this car has seats w/o the armrests so I can reach back to attach the belts.

On my Coupe, I have the arm rests in the way, plus under the arm rests are these slotted plastic guides to position the buckles so they don't get lost under the seat...so using the same kit with the 12" long buckle in a stiff plastic sleeve won't work. I could just order it with the longer buckle but its not available w/a stiff sleeve and I don't like having the buckle cluttering the center console.

Are their any other alternatives beside andover restraints? I've seen discussion in the 113 forums about using later model mercedes belts? Suggestions appreciated.

Actually, MB issued a service bulletin on how to fit belts from the 114/115 cars onto the 108/109. It is a near-direct bolt-on and the parts are still available. They employ a retractable mechanism that sits on the floor at the foot of the B-post.

perhaps someone here on the board can share this bulletin.

It's true that those belts are available new: I got a set from Tom Hanson last fall. Be advised, though, that there's a piece (through which the belt slides) that has to be bolted to the door post, which involves some welding of a nut suspended in a hole that's present on the 109 body but might be absent in the 111. I'd suggest asking about this little glitch before ordering the new belts. :(
