The shifting on my "69 280SE column mounted automatic seems to be very "loose" you can actually move the lever 1/2" without changing the gears. Once it is moved it engagaes the gears without problem. However it does bounce up and down when I hit any bumps in the road. I checked and there does not seem to be any play between the shift lever and the shift tube. I believe it originates from the plate that goes through the firewall??? Are there bushings available to take the slack out?

I started a thread a few weeks ago about 108/109 column-mounted shifter- take a quick look at it- my shifter is getting loose, too. There are little nylon bushings that need to be replaced, that should solve your problem.
