Hello all,
Just purchased a 2006 E320CDI CPO 14k miles. I have previously owned a 1975 mercedes 240d but the E is a whole different animal! Anything I should look out for as far as problems with engine, electrics etc? I found the thread on oil change intervals very interesting, as I was shocked by the 13k recommend from MB. I grew up on the 3,000 mile interval. My question is as I do my fair share of short trips does this 13k hold true? I don't see any different intervals listed for harsh service as was the practice years ago. Any responses greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Only problem I'd worry about is keeping close to posted speed limit!

You're not kidding. I had a jaguar xj8 before the cdi and the seat of the pants 0-60 feels very similar, but without the thirst for gas station stops.

My 06 CDI turns one year old next week. I have driven almost 20k miles and no problems yet. I love the car! This is my first diesel and I'm never going back to gas. Let's hope the reliability issues that pleague MB according to consumer reports don't come knocking at my door. My first MB was a 2001 C class that was full of small electrical switch issues and loved to burn bulbs.

Most W211 problems were with the SBC braking system, and just involved recalls to the dealer.
SBC seems to have finally become trouble-free by 2006.
Just in time for it to be dropped on EVERY Mercedes model for 2007.

Read the owners manual, follow the service intervals as displayed on the cluster exactly.
If you live over in Europe the oil change intervals are 19,000 miles or 30,000km. 3000 miles is a scam that the oil change places came up with the scare you into forking over huges sums of cash.
Make sure you use the correct lubricants (at least make sure your dealer does) and drive more worry less.

I hear alot of talk on another thread about the FSS. In my manual it says this is Canada only (I'm in US). I'm assuming then that there is no monitoring for short trips etc. and that the 13,000 mile interval is the only one. Is there a certain number of months/years the system will trigger for an oil change if the mileage is not exceeded?
Thanks for the info

It records everything.
Short trips get a larger distance penalty. While the engine is cold the next service interval will reduce you distance remaining by upwards of 150%. Conversly if you are driving mostly highway the distance till you next service will only be counted down at 70% of the actual distance travelled.
Any oil added is factored in since you are topping off the oil additives. Depending on quantity you can get a few hundred kilometers of distance credited towards your next service.
The FSS is always active and monitors the engine at all times and in all driving conditions.

My U.S. model 2003 has FSS, but my understanding is that after a year or two they went to fixed service intervals. I don't know how the current FSS reports to the driver, but I assume from the discussion that there is still some form of FSS that does not dictate when to service components, just what to service for the dealers.
Frankly, I like my version of FSS, except you need a translation of the service codes in order to know what services are being called for, e.g., A, C, E, F. When I asked the dealer, he gave me a printout of the codes. Otherwise, all you know is that the car calls for various services, and the it's up to the dealer to check the readout and do whatever is called for. I like the variable service intervals, although my services as dictated by FSS, have generally been at 12,000. My understanding is that this is pretty much the usual service mileage in the southern California area.

Go to the back of your maintenance manual, all the services are broken down for you.
