got a question?

need to change diff oil.

had to take off cover so i could change a drive axle.

i got the fill plug out. previous owner left a sawed off hex in the hole. used a 13 mm socket breaker bar and 4 ft of leverage added 200 lbs of me. came lose easy .

the stuff that poured out was thick and stinky . thicker than the 80-90 gear oil i used in my volvo.

had to get back on the road so i poured old oil thru a 50 micro bag filter and put it back in the diff, then topped off with the 80-90 oil.

i know bad bad. miltary training says do what you can do till you can do what you need to, sooo.

so now
i can hear i whine coming from the rear of the car. i'm guessing differential.

so:
what's supposed to go in there?
what can go in there?
and what's the difference?

for that matter what about the rest of the fluids for this car. i see some say MB only others say synthetic this or that. ???

what and why?

80w-90 is the correct weight. If you use synthetic you can go a little lighter (75w).

Differentials rarely go bad, and if you put back in what came out, and added 'new' oil, then it shouldn't have caused problems in the short term.

How long did you drive on it?

thursday will make a week. the old stuff was much thicker than the 80 90 oil. more like motor honey.

i'll pick up some 80-90 synthetic tonight. thanks.

is there a thread that discusses the merits / differences between one fluid and another. what can be used should be used and should be avoided??
