I know this is only a minor issue, but annoying anyway.
I keep having to replace the two thick rubber O-rings that are
used to hang the exhaust system at the rear of the car.
It seems that they only last about 1-2 years. I have been getting
the replacements at a local O'Reilly parts store. Although not expensive,
perhaps thay are not as durable as they should be.

Does anyone else experience this problem, and should I just try to
find a better source for these items?

Thanks,

Ed

Get 'em from Mercedes. Mine have lasted about 15 years.

I've never had one break, and I use only the MB ones (they're inexpensive).

If you are really breaking them often, one thing to look at is if the exhaust system is hanging properly, or if it's pulling on the donuts excessively.

Also, if you buy the kind specified for a 560SL (107), they have a piece of chain inside, it'll never actually break apart. This is the kind that looks sort of like a figure eight, that goes all the way in back, not the one that looks like a rubber ring.

If the part # is 124-492-00-44 for a square mount, it is a steel reinforced hanger for $0.57 a piece, at www.rockauto.com. If the part # is different, you may do a search at that online shop or at www.thebenzbin.com.

Non-OEM replacement doesn't have the steel reinforce inside and can easily break.

I found my replacement 116-492-00-82 at the above online store.

I was unable to upload a picture of the hanger - "Exceeds forum quota by 166.83MB", thought the pic file is only 49KB. But you can get the image from the online store with the part # search.

Good luck,

Thanks for the replies. I am now a little confused. I have been using
the round (little donut type) thick rubber rings, as is shown on the
rockauto.com and other sites. But the rockauto site also shows the
more square-shaped with the crosspiece for the same application
on this car.

Have I been using the wrong ones?

If so, it would explain why they keep breaking.

And the square ones are much cheaper anyway!!!

Is is the square ones that everyone else has been using? These
go on the two hooks on the rear muffler
that are just underneath the rear bumper.

I'll just get a set and try them.

To Ed and Others,

I know I am a 123 model guy, but this 126 is so similar so I will contribute here.

I have had 123s in my family since the late 80s. We never had this problem until my 1985 MBZ 300D had one rubber ring disapper and one split and dangle. No damage happened and no exhaust detached from my car. I have 4 rubber hangers that are round donut shaped. Two right below the bumper and two further back all holding the muffler/exhaust system.

I noticed the one split rubber piece is very brittle and the others on there look brittle too. THey have lasted over 20 years, so Mercedes must be doing something right.

I ordered all 4 new ones From the Mercedes dealer and they are only a few dollars each. Even if after market is cheaper, you are talking a few bucks or pennies, plus the MB ones last 10 times as long, so it is a no brainer as to which is the right choice. The dealer told me that they no longer make the round donut ones. MB has improved the design with a diamond/square shaped one. I did not think the old design was this problematic, but nonetheless, MB would not redesign something unless it made it better. Perhaps it is cheaper producing a square design instead of a donut. In any case, buy the MB one, it is both superior in quality and cheap.

On my 1987 420 SEL, the middle muffler hangers are square shape with link in the middle connecting the 2 verticle edges. The muffler at the back bumper uses diamond-shaped hanger, again with link in the middle.

Original MB steel infored muffler hangers have the part # on them. If there is no MB part # on the donut-ring hangers, chances are that they are after-market replacements which may not meet MB engineering standards.

Online parts stores list both OEM and other after-market parts. So you may need to check the OEM manufacture. In my case for the middle muffler hanger, MEISTERSATZ seems to be the OEM.

With some online parts stores, sometimes OEM parts are cheaper that after-market replacements - wonder how/why.

Just thought about it. Take a look at the hooks on the body and the muffer. The square-mount hanger works with a flat hook surface, on which the little notch on the top edge of the hanger sits right inside the hooks on the muffler and under the vehicle. Square-mount hangers don't work with wire hooks. Use the hook under the vehicle as referece, in case that the muffler has been replaced with an non-OEM replacement which typically use wire hooks weilded to muffler or pipe.

I just got my donut shaped exhaust hangers. I thought they would give me the diamond shaped ones but maybe there was a few old ones left in storage. NO problem, they were brand new and powder coated.
I ordered 4, but only needed 2, as the other 2 were still working. I will keep the spare in my trunk. THe exhaust will not fall off from the car if the 2 older donuts fail just because of the design.

The part number and Mercedes logo are on the donuts. Do not settle for anything but MB.

The donuts I ordered had part number 107-492-00-82

They were $1.39 each wholesale, $1.70 retail

Yes, this is dealer price. Never awesome dealer price is always expensive.
