Dialog has been slow here on this forum... but that can change quickly if you have particular questions for us the rake over! I am not a mechanic, but as founder of the M-100 Group I can bring in experts for any kind of a pre-or post purchase question about these cars.
"M-100" is the factory's engine code for the Mercedes "big block V8s" of the magnificent 600, 6.3 and 6.9 sedans built in the 1960s and 1970s.
My own "M-100" is a 6.9 I've now owned 19 years. I've driven it about 65,000 miles and savor every excuse for a trip. It's most distinctive feature is low RPM torque. .. the engine doesn't seem to care what gear it is in; quiet power grows noticably with every fraction-of-an-inch accelerator pressure. This combine with an extremely rigid body, conveys a sense of security and confidence only matched by today's Mercedes-Benz V-12s. Similar descriptions are common from 600 and 6.3 owners.
As "flagship" models, the 600, 6.3 and 6.9 will aways have a special place in Mercedes history. No Mercedes-Benz book is complete without facts about them. As flagship models they are sophisticated machines -- not a good choice for the first-time Mercedes collector. That said, they are frequently found in serious car collections worldwide. While on a price "plateau" for the last decade, they've not done anything "wrong" except be too young. Outstanding examples are beginning to command double and even triple the "average" prices of these model. As nostalgia for the 1960s and 1970s grows these icons will become more and more hallowed.
I am Chairman of a national gathering of M-100 Enthusiasts in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota June 8 through 10, 2007. Owners have already registered from to drive the cars from as far as Pennsylvania, Virginia, California and Oregon. Experts are coming from Europe and Australia. MBCA members are invited to participate in this "gathering of the faithful." Parts of the itinerary are being organized in conjunction with the Twin Cities Section of MBCA. For more information and registration form visit http://www.m-100.cc/Events/index.html
I will also be speaking at MBCA's STAR TECH 2007 in Reston, Virginia May 17 - 20 on the subject "Falling in Love with the Right Cars"
I look forward to chatting with you here, and meeting you in Minneapolis and/or Reston.
