Last night the hood release under the hood broke, and now the hood release under the dash appears not be working as well. Any recommendations on how to get the hood open? I have tried to pry the release under the hood with an "L" shaped tool to no avail.

if its just that plastic deal, use a hooked dental tool to grab the lever behind the grill. Or bend a coat hanger to grab it. I wouldnt tie wire to the release as a short term fix, cause that can really tear up the plastic grill. While you are waiting for a new hood pull tab from the internet, use a zip tie attached to the lever to open the hood. I am currently doing the same thing, a zip tie will do no damage during the wait.
If the lever itself is broken, you might be able to push the lever back with a flat tool. You could possibly dismount the cable from the handle on the dash to get more travel and take up the slack when you pull it if it wont pop up when you pull the handle, they often stretch

I like the dental tool idea; my father in law is a dentist. What is a "zip tie?". Finally opened it by rigging a hooked piece of metel attached to a pair of clamping pliers.

What is a "zip tie?"
Zip Tie - aka "Cable Tie," aka "Nylon Tie Wrap" - examples:

You can buy them at your local hardware, Radio Shack, Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc.
