Hi Guys,
Just did the ignition conversion (Crane XR-700 Fireball) on my '67 230SL. Really smoothed out the idle and acceleration. I did the same procedure on my W111 coupe last year with great results. I know this type of update isn't necessarily popular with the real purists, but if you ever find yourself in a position where you're considering it and want some easy input from a fellow shade tree mechanic, I'd be happy to help.

John, these are popular among 190SL folks and Ponton owners. Here's an article I wrote a few years ago:

Great article! Pic's and everything. It's such an easy and inexpensive way to make these old girls more reliable.
Thanks!

I know the change isn't popular with the purest's, but really, do you want to drive and enjoy it? Or do you want to show it. In my experience, these cars need to be driven. I have a 70 280SL that has been my daily driver for over 10 years. In order to do this I had to make a few exceptions. Yes I have installed the Pertronics pick-up. (Points burn too fast for me to deal with) When my electronic ignition module went out I replaced it with an MSD multi spark system. Okay, so it's not stock, but I installed it as a plug & play. The system can be converted back to original within half an hour without any wire splicing or cutting. Besides, the car never ran so well before. I'm in the Southern California heat, and get to drive the car every day. The car has just under 300,000 miles on it and has only had the top end of the engine done. Another must do conversion is the change the rear end to a 327 gear. Great for freeway driving. Most important... change your oil regularly. And drive the **** out of your car.

You got it MC!
Much nicer with the conversion. My 67 is a relative baby with only 56k, and I put insurance on it with a 2,000 mile annual limit. However, it is so darned enjoyable to drive I might breaking that restriction! I can already tell, these cars were built to be drive! :)
