My 71 280SE (108) transmission is leaking like a sieve. 1-2 shift happens at 3 mph, shifting is erratic, delayed engage into reverse. Although serviceable, probably not a good idea to re-seal.

Factory no longer produces a remanuf unit. Does anybody have a rebuild source. Very leary about mail-order.

Thanks for the Help!

What part of the country are you in ? This is a fairly simple trans to rebuild.

Hello.
I have a used 280 SE Transmission that I bought fora 113, but it didn't fit.
I have not used the transmission and I don't know if it works properly, but the guy that sold it to me said it was working fine.
I can sell it for $ 100.00 plus S & H.
Shipping of this product could be close to $ 100.00, so if you think this could help write me.
Transmission is in south Texas.

Thank you all for input. I picked car up on Monday after having the transmission resealed. Drives just like new, only old!

Hi Mark,

Is the shifting much smoother after the reseal or is it still quite jerky?

Thanks

what does it mean when the MB tranny leaks and needs to be resealed? from this thread, it sounds like an internal leak as it affects shifting? or is it a visible leak that results in spots under the car?

on the two early MB's that I own, they each shift differently, so i don't know which is right. on my 3.5 coupe, it likes to shift at higher revs, at least at 2500-3000rpm before upshifting. it makes the car feel really high strung while driving slow, but its great when you are in a hurry. no leaks under the car.

on my cab w/the 2.8, it shifts early. i'm barely moving and it shifts out of 1 and continues to upshift pretty quickly at low revs. but if i'm aggressive with the accelerator pedal or if i leave the shifter in 3, then it holds the gears longer including 1 and the car really scoots and can even chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift (it has a factory lsd). it is slow in engaging reverse, and leaves a drop of fluid at night.

so which is the right tranny behavior?

do i need to get my cab's tranny resealed? the process sounds more complicated than just replacing the pan gasket. and do you need to take it to a tranny specialist to have it done?
