I have had my 2003 E320 to the dealer a couple of times for a rough idle and occasionally the engine will stop. On the last trip I was told it was because the air breather was not on properly. I have checked for this before taking it in to the shop and never found that problem. Also , I find nothing between the input from the breather to the connection to the engine that meters the air. This is also an intermittent problem and if the breather was the cause wouldn't it be a constant problem?
