I've had my 5 speed 113 for about 4 years now, and although I knew it was somewhat rare, I've never come across another anywhere on the web other than in Europe. Does anyone know just how rare it is?

According to Michael Egan in a "Mercedes Clasics" article, there were 533 ZF 5-speed transmissions intstalled in 230SL/250SL and 350 installed in the 280SL. Rare but available.

Steve .... There are quite a few ZF 5-speeds around. Visit the Pagoda SL Group (http://sl113.org/home.asp) and you will find more.

Is it true that the majority of parts are no longer available for the 5 speed gear box? I seem to recall reading this on the Pagoda site, which of course is an important factor when looking for a used one!

JP .... There are "NO" parts available for the ZF 5-speed. The bearings are generic but everything else is just not available. The eBay cost of a used transmission is about $5K, they come up every so often.

Jim, beyond rarity, what does the 5 speed buy you?
Lower RPM's at hiway speed and with it reduced noise of engine and fuel savings.
Lower RPM's also results in less engine wear.
I wonder what the rpm difference is between the 4 and 4 spd trans at 80 MPH?
Is it 500 prm's ?
Sorry, tipo. I meant difference between 4 and 5 spd trans.

Zac .... The final gear ration of fifth gear is 0.89 so it reduces the cruising RPM about by about 500.

just out of curiosity, is there any other 5-speed transmission, besides the ZF, that can be installed?
