View Full Version : Brake reservoir on 1987 300D

My master cylinder went bad to the point of rubber chips coming out of it, so I replaced. When I bled the rear brakes, I found that fluid would not fill this subarea until the front compartment fluid was almost into the neck, at or above the "max" line. Is this normal, or should fluid run into the rear brake reservoir compartment and a more reasonably lower level? I wanted to rule out some sort of blockage between the compartments.

This was surprising because I thought fluid went into the rear reservoir at lower levels in my other cars, both Mercedes and non-Mercedes.

Thanks for any ideas.

The rear portion of the reservoir fills once you fill the front and the fluid then overflows into the rear reservoir.

In this manner, if either reservoir looses fluid due to a leak, the other retains fluid for braking . . .

George,

Thanks for the reply, which seems to indicate that my reservoir is OK. I was concerned that there may have been some other means of fluid transfer that was stooped up, but the rear compartment is getting fluid over the top of some kind of divider, even though the fluid level has to be really high for this to happen.

Thanks again.
