I have been looking to replace the stock radio in my 300E with a new Alpine CD player after the orignal radio failed and i was wondering if anyone knew how to remove the orignal radio.

Jordan,

The proceedure is in section 82-7502 of the MB manual. You may also find it in an aftermarket MB manual available in parts stores or public libraries.

If I remember right you can pull it straight out. The face plate pops off then you can pull it. The first time I took out mine I took apart the center consol and reached under it to push it out. It has been 3 years since I did this. Someone else verify that I am correct.

Jordan, you'll likely have to do some re-wiring to get around the fader switch and the amp in the trunk - if yours has one.

Do you have a fader switch in the console where your window buttons are?

I hate recommending another site for help...

Here are your problems: you'll have to determine where your antenna goes. If it goes into the unit in the trunk like mine did, you have to re-route an antenna all the way to the new head unit up front. Also, since you are going to bypass the fader and the factory amp, you'll need to run wires for the rear speakers to the trunk. No big deal, right. Uh oh. What's behind the back seat... The GAS TANK! AHHHHHH! You CAN find a spot to run it through, I'll check on mine in the morning and see where I ran it through. I routed the wires thru the console, under the back carpets, under the rear seat, and thru to the trunk.

You might also want to try a search out on the mercedesshop.com site - there are plenty of folks who have asked these questions before - I found my old posts regarding this, from 3-1/2 years ago! Good Luck,

Try this site. I found their instructions pretty handy.

Jordan, you have a Becker Grand Prix Electronic Model BE 780, which was used in the 1988 and 1989 Mercedes. It's a single-piece unit electronic AM, AM Stereo, and FM radio with automatic seek and scan tuning and cassette player (with CrO2/Metal tape switch and Dolby B/C Noise Reduction), 2 x 25 watt power and with anti-theft. There is no trunk amplifier with this model. So you will have an antenna cable that goes all the way to the back of the radio.

The site that Flakman mentioned really has a lot of good information and photos. Be very careful when removing the wood paneling of the console - it can crack.

I also have a page that describes a lot of the different radios used in Mercedes cars. Click here (http://drmemory.org/~dakota/MB/resource/Becker/radio.htm).
