I have a 1990 300se, dark blue. I've been unable to find any products/techniques to remove water spots. Appreciate any ideas.

jp, I have found the same thing with water spots on our dark color MB vehicles. They are impossible to remove. The water spots are etched in the paint, probably due to a combination of acid rain and the high temperatures created by the sun beating down on the dark color paint after a rain shower. It's nearly impossible to avoid getting a car exposed to rain at some point so I'd expect that all dark color vehicles have the same condition. I've used a heavy grit machine polish with a random orbital polisher without success. So I'd be interested to learn the technique for removing water spots. It's really a Catch 22 ... polish/wax causes water beads which the sun etches in the paint.

Water spots are the problem of all autos who have water beading after a rain shower.
Naturally to eliminate them you must dry the surface before the sun does which is an impossibility.
To remove those little critters and not remove some of your paint or clear coat; used a clay bar with lots of water; followed by a good non-abrasive polishe such as Meguirs No. 26.
