When I was active in General Aviation I was required by the FAA to maintain and Aircraft and Engine Log.
What's the difference?
I maintain an Automotive Log.
It identifies each repair performed on the machine by:
problem
work performed
date
mileage
parts replaced
by who
cost
conclusion
It helps with the Character of the machine.
Are there others as goofy as me?

I also record the amount of fuel and other lubricants.

Guess I never thought of it as a log book but, yes, I do keep one. I record the same info as you except for the first and last item. I used to work in accounting and I think of it as "documentation" It serves the same pupose.

i created an Excel spreadsheet that contains all of the recorded service and repair work (which is much easier for my technician to review then the 1" stack of ROs) and another to track fuel data...if anyone's interested in seeing either one, I'd be happy to e-mail them to you

I have an airplane and maintaining aircraft logs is a real pain. Often I just want something fixed so I can forget it. Like the passenger mirror I tore off backing out of the garage.

Hi All; I don't have a formal log for my 240D but I keep a computer log on each of our cars oil changes, repairs etc on Microsoft Word in my PC & have a little spiral notebook in the glove compartment for recording diesel fuel costs, mileage & amount bought.

The computer log gets handy when I need to know when to rotate tires, change oil & do timing belts etc. I have 90+% of the 240D records back to the 1000 mile check in Hanau, FRG in 83 by the original owner:) ;) :p :D

i use a credit card for most of my fuel purchases, which yields a nice little receipt that records a host of pertinent information. i simply scrawl the mileage onto the receipt and slip it into my wallet. the next day I post the info to my spreadsheet

Hey Skip I;
I'll take a look at your spread sheet if it's free.
The no fun spread sheet on Windows is my medication, blood sugar and pressure.
Pooo!

I keep a log for both cars. I use simple lined notebook paper and make columns for Date, Odometer, Work Performed, Where, and Cost. Each page, along with any invoices, are kept in page protectors in a three ring binder (notebook). Also, for quick reference, I darken in the "O" in the Oil change so that at a quick glance I can see when the last oil change was done.
