Hello all. I have a 1993 E300 2.8 that has a problem with the rear sunscreen. Pressing the dash button, you can hear the motor running, but the screen will not raise, and apparently it doesn't lower either because the rear headrest cutout switch will not allow the rear headrest to lower. The dealer says it needs a whole new sunscreen, to the tune of about $1000 parts and installation. Has anyone removed these? And if so, does anyone know if there are problems that I might cure by taking the thing out and disassembling it? Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know how tough it is to remove, but there are replaceable parts in there. Send me an email, hanson_anaheim@mbretailer.com , and I'll send you the exploded parts view of the assebly. I'm sure you'll have to pull the rear seat and remove the package tray.

Tom, I've tried to email you but it doesn't seem to be getting through. My email address is tshelburne@traid.rr.com.

Thanks again for the help.

To replace the rear electric sunscreen assembly:
1. remove the rear seat top and bottom.
2. remove the speaker covers hey slide out towards the fro ;) nt of the car and have a dzus fastener at the front to hold it in
3. remove the retaining screws for the compartment latches and the stop lamp assembly.
4. carefully lift and pull back the entire rear parcel shelf cover with the sunscreen assembly, removing the verticle slide bar and mount at the roof of the rear window first.
5. remove the four nuts holding the electric sun screen assembly to the rear parcel shelf.
6. the same toothed belt found on a replacement antenna mast makes a perfect replacement for the sunscreen lift as well, unless the gear in the motor is stripped like mine was (cheap bakelite gear turning on a brass worm gear (talk about German craftsmanship!.
