Anyone know the rules for obtaining antique or collector license plates? What are the benefits? What are the negatives?
Is every state uniform with regards to age of the car? or does it vary from stste to state? I guess I can check with DMV in my area.
Any info will be helpful.Happy driving.

Rules vary by state. I can tell you about NC and MD, but it may not apply to you.

Hi Len
Still enjoying your Ponton?
What can you tell me about special tags in MD. Thanks.
Happy driving.

Historic tags in MD were a real deal for me. No initial inspection needed and the tags were dirt cheap. something like $20/year vs. $70 for regular tags.
Finally some top down ponton weather around here. The rain has stopped!!

Here in NJ the historic plates are cheaper and there is no MV inspection requirement. The best thing however is the antique auto insurance. It is really cheap. I have a 1967 250sl with an agreed value of $20k and the annual premium , with collision is about $200 per yr. I have a 1949 plymouth coupe in original shabby condition with a value of $5k , the premium is $94.
The insurance from JC Taylor is nation wide.

But I don't think you have to have antique plates on the car in order to get collector car insurance. At least I hope not because I don't have the plates but I do have the insurance.
Len
no, but you are subject to inspection and the mileage limit on the historic insurance is the same for the antique plates-- 3000 miles per year.
