Hi Tom, I was wondering the same thing. See you Sept. 14th at the Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance. I have a great European 3 liter class put toghether for you to judge. My 220SE Coupe will be in the under 3 liter.

No activity here because the old MB's are trouble free. :)

I'm like Len. My 190SL made the trip from Virginia to the car show at MBUSA the weekend of the 21st and last weekend we drove it to an MBCA car show NJ. The car drove perfect and I enjoyed every mile except the hour stop and go at the 95/495 exchange in D.C. I now avoid that intersection.

OK Guys,
We will just have to start our own topic! There should be enough talent here to generate some interest!

Ok, let's hear from all of us vintage enthusiats about our favorite old MB, and maybe a few stories. I remember one year after Fashion Island, I was given a 300SL "alloy bodied" Gullwing to drive back to a guy's house. He drove his "standard" Gullwing and challenged me to a little speed contest. It wasn't much of a contest, but I learned that the Gullwing was the predecessor to the convection oven !!

I do know that a bunch of the vintage folks out here have 190SLs (that's how I got involved with MBCA and helping with this Forum). We have our own site, and use the same vBulleting software, so all of our questions end up out there. There's a decent 113 site as well. I don't know of one, but I'd have to think there's a 107 site. Of course, the Gullwing folks keep to themselves...:p

Tom:

There is vintage activity on the sites for a specific chassis like the 113's are hot over at www.SL113.org/forums and 190SL's have their site.

It may be that focused groups deliver a more specific solution. While I'm active on the 113 forum, I do check here to see if I can add to the knowledge...

That's amazing Tom,
Those aluminum bodied gullwings are so very rare. Wasn't it about 11 actually produced?

Well, to be exact, there were 29 alloy bodied Gullwings built. I believe all of them are now accounted for. #8 or #9 was missing up until a few tears ago, but I heard it was found somewhere. I know of one that will be for sale in about a year. Huge money..

Hi Everyone
I am sure this doesn't qualify as Vintage talk but just wanted to ask a question and take everyone down memory lane.
How old were you when you bought your first MB? What was your favorite memory? I was 30 and purchased a 85 380SL that I still have today 17 years later. One memory that stands out.
About two months after I purchased the car. I meet a lovely young lady at one of the local night clubs. After some dancing and heavy petting and kissing we headed for the Valet parking.
When my car arrived she said great car. I live 15 minutes away and I am going to make you wish you had bought a 560SEL.
I wonder what happened to that girl?
Happy driving.

I wonder what kind of car he was driving?
Your Ponton would give him more leg room, but my 380SL would give him enough speed to KEEP UP with the other cars on the road. No pun intented!!! This is a fun forum.
Happy driving.

Ok, this could be "nightmare alley" before it's over. I acquired my first MB in 1975 through marriage, a 59 220S sedan. That marriage produced two more MBs over the years; a 73 450SE and later a 71 6.3 . Well, the cars were more reliable than the wife. We split up in 1983 and I had to sell the 6.3 to pay my lawyer. The 220S and the 450SE had been sold prior to the "bad times". Sold the house too. Oh well, I remarried in 94 and have the best gal anybody would want to be with. Sure would like to have another 6.3 though..

Is that the 220SE 6.3 you had in mind? A 6.3 without air mounts! Wow, talk about Mr Toads Wild Ride. I guess one can wish for anything. Ed

Hello,
When I was sixteen years old, back in 1966, my first car was a 1955 Mercedes 190-SL. Mercedes automobiles were fairly unusual, not well known, and were not fashionable as is the case today. $760 was enough to purchase this good condition 190-SL in those days. I drove this car everyday for the next ten years. The experience kindled a lifetime relationship with these cars. I have enjoyed owning and driving many other Mercedes during the next thirty- seven years. I still own that first 190-SL!

Great first car. To me the fifty's was the best decade for MB's

I am sure there are a lot of 111 chassis owners out there that would like to exchange information. My 63 220 SEb Cabriolet may be old but still turns the ladies heads as I cruise by. Anyone out there know of a source for a printed parts manual for this model?

See the last issue of the STAR. MB Classic has started publishing lots of the old manuals for the older cars. And then there's always e-bay and the literature guys that advertise in the STAR.

There are way too many topics within this one thread. We've got to start a new thread when the subject changes.
