clearcoat chipping

[420SEL SEA]

New to the forum... just bought a 1987 420SEL (148K)- very nice condition - except for some of the clearcoat chipping off the hood.

Is there any product out there that can retard further chipping? Or am I looking at having the hood repainted? I'm a total novice, so when offering advice, don't assume I know anything.

Have loved reading the forum postings and I've learned a lot already. Looking forward to babying my new Benz.

420SEL SEA;
If it is just the clear coat chipping off and leaving the base coat;
I would suspect it has been repainted in that area and not properly sanded or prepped between coats.
If the color is an easy to match, you should consider painting the complete area where it is chipping.
