I have a 1979 240D with 18000 original miles. The car is in new condition.I would enjoy the car even more if it had a 5th gear.Is there a 5 speed trans that is available that would fit this car? I would appreciate it if any one out there could offer me a solution.

There are some European 5-speed transmissions that will bolt right in, as in 300D of the same year. Your car should still have a trans with the separate bell housing. the later cars had a one-piece trans/bell housing and that would be very difficult to install. Try to stay under 1980 and you'll be safe. You could go as far back as 1971-72.

G.G, you should meet my father, he drives his 1982 Porsche 911 about 400 miles a year at most, it has about 50,000 miles on it.

1985 240D with a 5spd manual that has "some" engine damage.
The engine overheated because there was a small crack at the top of the radiator (the radiator had a plastic top) so the water had slowly leaked out without any indication of a leak while parked. The water pump also failed. I had the radiator and water pump replaced but I think the engine overheated bad enough to cause some damage to the piston rings or gaskets. If the car sits for a few weeks without running it smokes badly for a few minutes before clearing up. The interior is in good shape, a smaller dent in the passenger side front door and the clear coat is starting to flake off. The car has a power sunroof that still works. The A/C does not work. We also have all the paper work from when the car imported (EPA, shipping etc.)

To Tonymax
The car came from the factory with a 5 sdp manual transmission much to the disappointment of my mother-in-law. I think her last words to the father-in-law before he left to order the car, while they were living Europe was "no manual transmission and don't get a green car". The car is green too. As you can tell, my in-laws bought and then imported the car back in 1985. They gave it to my wife about ten years ago. We still have the paper work for all the import regs. Hopefully you have see the pics and have read that the engine was somewhat damaged when it overheated. The engine still runs and I have occasionally driven the car around town. I would like to get 1500.00 for the car. The main value being the 5 spd., but I think the engine could be rebuilt and last another 200k miles.

The car has been sold to a forum member in Texas.
Hopefully he will post some comments about what he did with the car and the 5-spd transmission.
Thanks

Tonymax,
I have a 79 240D that I restored eight years ago. I was wondering does your transmission have any vacuum line connections to it? Mine doesn't and I was wondering if that is why it is so jerky in some gear changes?

Steve, sorry for my late response.I really couldn't give you an accurate answer regarding you question about a vacume line to the trans. But here is what you should do,call Precision Motors in Cinncinati Ohio and ask for Mike.Tell him that Tony from Michigan recommended that you call him.Mike is an excellant guy and will be able to get you the answer. The phone number is 513-271-5565.
