Automated Leather Seats for 450 SL

I have the original leatherett seats in my 1979 450SL. Actually, they are quite uncomfortable on longer drives, although I have to admit that I haven't done that too often as I have only 7,000+ original miles. On each trip of more than a few miles, I wonder, however, if the original seats could be replaced with more modern seats, with reclining, raising and lowering, and lumbar support like my new cars. And can anyone recommend a truly comfortable leather seat to replace these originals. Or, since the car is in such great, original shape, would I be better served to leave it as original as possible. Just wondering.

Jim. I've got no direct knowledge with the seat upgrade you propose, but given enough time and money anything is possible. Expect the upgrade to be prohibitively expensive. I inquired about upgrading the electric seats in my parents 1995 E320 to include the 'memory' feature and was advised that it would cost several thousand dollars. In your case you need 2 complete seats and seat mechanisms plus the door control switches, wiring, etc. so the numbers will quickly add up. The electric seats may also sit higher than the manual ones to accommodate the motors which position the seat.
