I have a dark blue E320 wagon. I've used Collinite insulator since new with very good result, but I do use a car wash four or five times during the winter because I have no alternative. I have minor swirls and buffmarks that I would like to remove. My question is, can I do this by hand? If so , which product will get me back to the smooth , flawless finish that I need?
I avoid detailers because I feel that I can do better than they can.

Nick,
It depends on the amount of minor swirls and buffmarks. Goto the links below for information.

This is what I would do. This really depends on the products you use.
1. Wash car
2. Clay car.
3. Wash car
4. Move car into garage and look at paint with florescent light.
5. I would use a cleaner/polish with a D/A polisher. If you have lite swirls and buffmarks, Meguairs Scratch X will work with a micro fiber towel.
6. Depending on how much abrasions in the cleaner/polish, I would wash car again.
7. Use a glaze or what Meguairs call a true polish.
8. Wax.

Thanks Tiggerfink, I'll give it a try.

tiggerfink went to such detail; you couldn't go wrong following his suggestions.
I have removed minor blimmishes from the surface of my '85 300DT's original finish.
I've used an easier approach! "CLAY" followed by Meguiars Hi-Tech Yellow Wax 26.
But whatever method you use always rub straight line front to rear, not circular.
I would suggest a complete clay rubbing after you have polished front to rear.
The clay will return the lustre you had originally.
