Flashing lights on shift to reverse

Greetings. My '93 300E has taken to flashing. When the car is put in reverse, the interior lights flash sporadically. Seems to be short somewhere. Is there wiring under the console that could be shorting out? Or is it more likely a wiring harness running somewhere closer to the transmission? Or some short between the back up light wiring and some interior wiring? Thanks for any help.

The 2 easiest places to look are:

1. Back up light swich wiring on the transmission (can't get at my books right now to check the circuitry).

2. Wires going around the shift handle have not been dressed properly. Pull the cover and check them out.
