View Full Version : Oh No! Bad Idea...

Hello World,
I am embarrassed to tell you all this, but I did something dumb. While washing my windows during a fill up at the gas station last night I saw some of those yellow-brown "drops" on the windshield that are so hard to wash off, the gas station's nylon squeegee got them off with some hardy scrubbing. It was then that I saw one one the fender and without much thinking tried to get it off with the same squeegee. It seemed to be baked on (I live near San Diego) and so I thought I would have to leave it until the next car wash.
This morning in the daylight I noticed that I have scuffed the clear coat all around where the spot is. It's pretty bad and looks dull in that area.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can do to get the scratches off?
Thank you in advance.
John

John, use some polish ... start with the least abrasive polish you have and proceed to a more abrasive polish if the fine polish fails to remove the scratches. If you're forced to use a more abrasive polish use the least abrasive polish as the last polishing step. Then apply a high quality carnuba wax.

Hi Fred,
Thank you for the reply.
Can you recommend a good polish to use? Is this an application for "Clay"?

John, I'd try Meguair's Scratch X (Fine Scratch and Swirl Remover) or a combination of Griot's Garage Machine Polish 1, 2 and 3 to remove the scratches. Clay removes surface contaminants ... I wouldn't expect clay to have any effect on scratches

Hi Ferdman,
Thank you for the tip. I think I will try the Meguiar's Scratch X first since I saw it at my local shop.

Since the car is new to me and I do not know when it was waxed last I also want to do that after I get the scratches out. I saw a lot of opinions in other threads on wax, but is there anything I should be aware of relating to a 1992 300CE's paint? It is the very dark gray metallic, or black pearl color.
Thanks again!

John, I prefer Griot's Garage Carnauba Wax (a paaste wax), but Meguiar's makes many excellent waxes too ... particularly their Hi-Tech Yellow Wax 26.
