hello all,
the manual for my 78 300d has ATF A sub type A as the fluid for the power steering.
What should i use? I cannot find ATF "a".

Thanks in advance
Matt

Around here I see type A ATF in a lot of convenience store / gas stations.

I may be wrong but there are only two types for autos. It is either type "A " or dexron.

Dexron is predominate (now Dexron III, i believe). Addatives used in current Dexron are reported to be rough on seals in older PS pumps. Type A has few, if any addatives and is closer to the fluid used at the time the car was built. There are some other types out there now. Type F is an old Ford fluid. Mercon is for later Fords. Mercon V is for newer Fords. There are some special Honda and Chrysler ATF's. There are even some special MB ATF's for the newest models.

In my 240D and 300D, I use Valvoline Syn PS fluid, I don't even bother with ATF for the power steering fluid.
